Clean and Green

Smart gardeners are incorporating an aquaponics system into the home gardens. It’s fun, the science is simple and you can get started for a very modest investment.  Here’s how it works:

  • Fish waste is a natural fertiliser rich in nutrients.
  • Growing plants take up the nutrients – filtering and cleaning the water for your fish.
  • By growing fish and plants in your aquaponics pond – you can enjoy a wonderful array of fast growing, leafy vegetables like spinach, water cress, lettuce or even some varieties of tomatoes.

Aquaponic systems can be small – 3 square metres will grow 25 fish and 30 – 50 plants.  To get started, we recommend a Pondmax dirt water pump, it’s low maintenance, very energy efficient and has great flow. One you’re set up you’ll be enjoying fresh veggies in a few short weeks.  Fish take a bit longer to get from pond to plate.  Take a look at our video to see how it’s done.
